The Invasion of Goranth

Breakaway started as a small fishing village southeast of Goranth. It quickly became a haven for smuggling goods into and out of the Kingdom. While the smuggling was mainly controlled, a charismatic leader arose and kicked out the Goranth-appointed rulers and declared itself a free and independent city, Breakaway.

Realising the cost of reclaiming the city would be considerable, Goranth decided to allow Breakaway to become independent. Goranth's displeasure was noticeable over this succession. Goranth promptly clamped down economically on Breakaway, raising import duties to the Kingdom. Goranth also increased the anti-smuggling patrols. During this period, banditry around Breakaway significantly increased because the anti-smuggling patrols were ineffectual. Breakaway believed that Goranth funded some of the bandits and ordered the anti-smuggling patrols to stand down. This, however, could not be proved.

So, while this stalemate kept the area reasonably stable, Breakaway morphed into a pirate city supplying both a market and a supply point for the pirate ships. These pirate ships had a noticeable effect on Goranth's trade.

Breakaway and its pirates became so emboldened that they planned an attack on Goranth to sack the city. Goranth became aware of this plot and made substantial plans to counterattack. Breakaway planned to mount an attack by sea, and once Goranth's attention was on the attack, insurgents mounted an attack on the palace while simultaneously attacking the southern gates. Once the southern gates were taken the insurgents would open the city to the invading army.

Goranth sent messages to Illyria, Brennan, and Dwarvenhelm, where counterattacks were organised and implemented. Both Dwarvenhelm and Illyria agreed to supply an army to support Goranth. Dwarvenhelm also agreed to provide passage through its tunnels to Oretoun, allowing for a flanking attack by sea against Breakaway. This combined army circled around the peninsula and landed near Breakaway, waiting for Breakaway's army to leave.

Meanwhile, Goranth started rumours that Brennan was having difficulties with an invasion force from the north and thus pretended to send military aid to support Breenan. In reality, the ships were empty of soldiers, and Goranth's navy moved to rendezvous with Brennan's navy behind the island to the northeast of Goranth.

Once Breakaway's army and navy left, Illyria and Dwarvenhelm marched into Breakaway in the dead of night and conquered the city almost unopposed. Immediately, scouting groups were sent out to ensure Breakaway armies did not know this invasion had occurred. After a few days, a large section of the combined Illyria and Dwarvenhelm armies marched towards Goranth behind the Breakaway armies.

Once Breakaway's navy had sailed past the Goranth's east tower, the combined navies of Goranth and Brennan swung up behind the fleet and ensured that Breakaway's navy was trapped within Whiting Bay.

As Goranth city noticed the armies of Breakaway approaching, it opened the southern gates and simulated an internal uprising. The Breakaway Navy noted the rising smoke, and they attacked. At this point, Goranth closed their southern gates.

The pirate fleet was attacked from behind by the combined navy of Goranth and Brennans Keep. Dwarvenhelm and Illyria attacked Breakaway's armies from the rear. All the battles were short and furious, but Breakaway was resoundingly defeated.
