With the ship’s electronic systems failing, the colony pods were released almost simultaneously to try and save as many colonists as possible. The original plan of a uniform distribution of pods was no longer possible, so rather than being spread uniformly over a large area, the pods were dropped, and clumps of pods were formed. Some fell in isolation from other pods, and some crashed. A significant portion managed to land, although damaged.
Once the colonists were jettisoned, the remaining ship personnel tried to save as much of the ship as possible. However, after releasing all the pods, the continual buffeting of the atmosphere, and the failure of the onboard systems, the ship started to break up into sections.
